The Practical Nurse Extern (PNE) provides basic care under the direction and supervision of a licensed or registered professional nurse. The PNE role is designed to provide an experiential learning opportunity for students to evolve towards professional practice through the acquisition of basic clinical skills and advancing their knowledge related to patient care.
PNEs promote a positive patient experience by partnering with the patient, family and other health care providers to provide excellence in customer service and assistance with patient flow, and the delivery of safe, quality care.
The PNE assists other health care providers with safe, age appropriate and culturally competent care by performing basic patient care functions; i.e. vital signs, history taking, preparing patients for provider examination, patient communication and other duties deemed necessary.
The PNE must be able to work in a fast-paced environment which requires multitasking activities and ongoing communication with the care team. Must be able to perform under stressful conditions with a compassionate, respectful and helpful manner. Must be able to take direction from a variety of care providers. Must be organized with excellent communication skills.
Required Minimum Education: High School diploma and/or equivalent required. Successful completion of an accredited practical nursing program with the intent to test for licensure and pass within six months from date of hire. Please note: This is an extern position.
Required Minimum Licensure/Certification: Must have a valid/current CPR or BLS card from the American Heart Association by the first day of employment.
Required Minimum Experience: Work experience in an ambulatory care setting and/or work experience in a medical assisting role or other healthcare related field preferred.
Required Minimum Skills: Ability to read, write and speak the English language; Strong customer service and interpersonal skills; Ability to collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care; Ability to multi-task essential; Ability to function in stressful situations; Strong detail orientation required; Computer skills required; Personal time management skills are required; Basic computer skills required. Ability to enter information into an electronic medical record required; Basic medical terminology required.
